New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
